Shaw Industries Inc Senior Chemist in Dalton, Georgia
The Chemist will have hands-on experience with the analysis of materials using available analytical equipment found in the Central Lab. Instrumentation includes but is not limited to LC/MS, GC/MS, FTIR, DSC, TGA, TMA, and other modern analytical instrumentation. Knowledge of thermoplastic analysis is preferred. The position will work with a variety of wet chemical test methods such as solution viscosity, titrations and decomposition/hydrolysis of resins. The position will work on problems related to research, quality, environment, basic method development, method reliability, and reproducibility.
The candidate will be able to learn or apply lab resources to complete assigned projects.
Perform detailed analysis of polymers that have an end use in fibers, carpet backings, resilient products, molding resins, topical treatments, raw material composition.
Identification of product components and coating materials including sample preparation, analysis, and interpretation of results.
Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography
Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy
Differential Scanning Calorimetry
Scanning Electron Microscopy
Ability to develop and validate new test methods to solve complex problems for customers based on industry knowledge and experience.
Provide written and verbal correspondence describing test results to internal and external customers.
Have hands-on knowledge of the use of GC, HPLC, and GC/MS instrumentation for the analysis of organic compounds.
Ability to train new technicians to meet analytical quality, production and safety requirements.
Method analysis utilizing statistics to determine quantitation and detection limits.
Ensure testing and work habits are safe and that proper PPE is being used throughout the laboratory.
Train technicians to conduct test methods that are repeatable and reproducible.
Attend conferences and continuing education.

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or equivalent, and have 5+ years of industry experience with a concentration in at least two of the analytical instrumentation methods listed above supplemented with a variety of wet test methods and analytical instrumental analysis.
The candidate will also have 5+ years of experience with the fiber production process, polymerization, finish, and product development and product deformulation.
Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Candidate must be able to adapt to change and learn continuously.
